Celebrating the International Day of Happiness on March 20th
Happiness is more than just a feeling. It is a fundamental human goal and a universal aspiration. That is why the United Nations has designated March 20th as the International Day of Happiness, a day to celebrate and promote the happiness and well-being of all people around the world.
The International Day of Happiness was first established by the UN General Assembly in 2012, following a proposal by Bhutan, a country that has adopted the concept of Gross National Happiness as a measure of progress¹. Since then, the day has been observed every year with various events, activities, and campaigns to raise awareness and inspire action for happiness.
The theme for the 2024 International Day of Happiness is “Happiness for All, Together”. This theme reflects the importance of solidarity, compassion, and kindness in these challenging times, as well as the need to work together to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to end poverty, reduce inequality, and protect the planet².
So how can you join the celebration and spread some happiness on March 20th? Here are some ideas:
- Take the Happiness Pledge and commit to creating more happiness in your life and in the world.
- Share what makes you happy on social media using the hashtags #InternationalDayOfHappiness and #HappinessForAllTogether.
- Watch the Happiness Film Festival, a selection of short films that showcase stories of happiness and hope from around the world.
- Join the [10 Days of Happiness] challenge, a free online program that helps you boost your happiness and well-being in 10 simple steps.
- Send a [Happiness Card] to someone you love or appreciate, and let them know how much they mean to you.

- Do something kind for yourself or someone else, such as meditating, exercising, volunteering, or giving a compliment.
Happiness is not something that happens to us, but something that we can create and share with others. By celebrating the International Day of Happiness, we can remind ourselves and others of the power and potential of happiness, and how it can make the world a better place. 🌎
